Troubleshooting Windows Vista Errors

Although Windows Vista has undergone thorough testing during its development phase, it is still just like any other software program and has its share of problems. In this article, we are going to cover some of the commonly faced Windows Vista errors and their solution procedures.

Compatibility Issues

Windows Vista is shipped with minimal compatibility with older operating systems. For this reason, you are quite likely to receive PC errors, such as OCX errors and DLL errors when trying to run some programs—especially if you have upgraded to Vista from an older Windows operating system.

Most of the time, you can resolve these issues by reinstalling the software that generated the error message. You may also try to search for and install updates of these programs, if they are available.

If you constantly receive error 0xc004d401, it might indicate that you have an incompatible antivirus program or a Rights Management (DRM) program installed on the system. To resolve errors in this case, you will have to uninstall the problem software from the system. You can do this with the help of Windows Add or Remove Programs tool or a reliable, Windows Vista compatible, third-party program uninstaller tool.

Update Issues

Update related issues are quite common on Windows Vista computers. There are many causes of these errors. Some of the most common ones are:

  • Services required for Windows update to run on the system are not running. These services include, Background Intelligent Transfer Service, Automatic Updates, Background Intelligent Transfer Service, Cryptographic Services, Remote Procedure Call, and System Restore Service.
  • The C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder on the system is corrupt.
  • DLL files required to run the Windows Vista update are incorrectly registered.

To resolve these issues, ensure that all the required services are started and replace the existing Software Distribution folder. You may also try to use the regsvr32 command to re-register the wintrust.dll file on the system.

Miscellaneous Issues

In addition to those issues listed above, there are several other causes of PC errors on Windows Vista. These include registry errors and malware infections.

Malware infections can usually be diagnosed immediately because a computer infected with a virus or Trojan starts generating several computer errors. Additionally, you may notice a sudden slow down in computer speed. If this happens, you must immediately update your antivirus tool and run a thorough full-system scan.

You may choose to run the scan in Safe mode to make it more effective. If your antivirus program does not include an antispyware, you must also obtain a separate tool and perform a spyware scan on the system.

Registry problems usually occur as your PC gets older. As you install and remove programs, change system settings, and perform other tasks on your Vista computer, a lot of information is added, removed, or modified in the registry. In fact, if you have a registry monitoring tool in hand, you will see that there not a single moment that no action has taken place within the registry when your PC is operational.

All this activity makes the Vista registry quite prone to attract several unwanted entries that unnecessarily fill it up, and over a period cause corrupt and fragment the registry files. This, in turn, slows down the data access speed from the registry and as a result, slows down your computer.

In addition to this, corrupt information within the registry may also give rise to several computer errors. To prevent and fix these registry problems, you must perform a registry scan and repair. You can do this easily with the help of a good and simple-to-use registry tool.
