IBM, although no longer the total dominating force in info technology that it was up until the early 80s, is still a huge and important company. It is still a strong competitor in virtually every arena, including Universal DB2 database software. Oracle is still #1 in databases, but IBM no doubt makes a lot of money being #2 or #3.

A lot of companies have this, and others have Informix database software, and IBM recently bought out the database division of Informix, so there are undoubtedly a lot of current and future employment opportunities open to people who can demonstrate expertise with DB2.

Worth it?

Standard disclaimer:

Whether or not any certification is "worth it" is an individual decision. You alone must decide what your career goals and needs are.

Look at certifications from a cost/benefit or Return On Investment (ROI) basis. If they help you get a better paying job or make more money at your current job, they are obviously "worth it."

The problem is, there is no real way of measuring how much you can expect your income to go up as a result of any given certification. It also depends on non-related job search skills such as how well you network.

The IBM DB2 certifications include:

There are two levels of IBM DB2 database certifications:

  1. IBM Certified Solutions Expert for DB2 Universal Database
  2. IBM Certified Advanced Technical Expert -- DB2 Universal Database Advance Technical Expert

IBM's site contains a lot of information about what is available. Some of the confusion results from the availability of DB2 on so many different operating systems and platforms, some of which you've probably never heard of.

They also offer testing information, including sample questions and assessment exams. Also, educational resources. Where to take classes. Books to order. Etc. Everything you need to get you started.

The Different IBM Certified Solutions Expert Certifications for DB2 Universal Database:

This is the beginning DB2 certification. Each one requires passing at least two tests. Some of the tests are the same, so once you have passed that particular test, you can use it for more than one certification.

IBM still recommends you have at least 6 months experience with DB2 before taking the tests, so this is another certification you are not supposed to use to break into a computer career.

The test versions will change over time as IBM brings out higher versions of DB2 and discontinues older versions. As with all other certifications, you'll just have to keep yourself educated and up to date and take the tests to keep yourself certified.

The Different IBM Certified Advanced Technical Expert Certifications for DB2 Universal Database:

You must pass already be certified in the appropriate IBM Certified Solutions Expert, and pass one or more additional tests.
